What to look out for when buying used golf clubs

Sunday, September 2nd, 2007 4:00PM

You have found a set of used golf clubs that you like and the price is right. But how to know you got a good deal? Here are some of the things you might want to check before buying the used golf clubs.

1. Clubhead

Check the clubhead for any worn out spot. Worn out area looks smooth with no grooves. Fine surface scratches are not a problem as they are present in normal use.

For woods, check for cracks and indentations. These defects will affect play. Give the clubhead a twist to make sure that it is not loose.

2. Shaft

For graphite shaft, check for any abrasion and fraying, especially at the part of the shaft that contact the golf bag. Look out for cracks near the joint to the hosel.

For steel shaft, check for bents and dents. The shaft should be straight and free of rust.

3. Grip

Check for any worn out spot on the grip, especially near point where the thumb rest on the grip. Look out for any splitting and crack near the point nearest to the shaft.

But worn out grip is usually not a very big problem. It can be easily replaced at the cost of a few dollars per club. If you really find a used golf clubs that you like but some of the grip is not up to standard, don’t let it deter you. Just need to factor in the additional cost for re-gripping when buying.

4. For iron set

If you are buying a complete iron set, check to clubs to make sure they come from the same original set. This is important because you expect constant performance progression from across the set. Having a different club or club with different shaft flex with mess this up.

5. Additional checks

Shake the clubs to listen for any rattles. Any rattling indicates that something is loose.

Should you get a set of brand new golf clubs or used golf clubs? You probably asked yourself this question when you are looking for golf clubs. Each option has its pros and cons.

If money is of no concern, the choice is obvious. But most us do not have deep pocket, so used golf clubs becomes a very good alternative.

Let’s look at some of reasons why you should get used golf clubs:

  1. If you are a beginner and not sure if golf is the game for you, then you should consider getting used golf clubs. You don’t want to make a huge investment (can be several thousand dollars for a complete golf set) at this point if you are not sure.
  2. If you don’t hit the ball very well. Not hitting the ball on the sweet spot induces stress on the golf club. Worse if you if the hard ground before the ball. If you consistently hit bad shots, you can damage the club. So trying using used golf clubs while you work on your swing. You can also buy that brand new driver after your skill has improved.
  3. If you have a limited budget or like to save money. Well, this is the most obvious reason. Used golf clubs cost a fraction of the new price, making them easier on the budget.
  4. Used golf clubs perform just as well new ones. If performance is what you are after, there is no need to shell out a lot of money. The key is inspecting the equipment carefully before buying to ensure you don’t get damage parts.
  5. If you are someone who likes to change you golf clubs often. Since used golf clubs are cheaper, you can afford to change your golf clubs more often and get the experience using different brand. Instead of sticking to same one for years because you spent fortune on it.

So if any of the above reasons is true for you, then you should consider used golf clubs.

Golf Clubs

Golf clubs are what you used to hit the golf balls. The basic components of a golf club are: the club head, shaft and the grip. All golf clubs, from driver to putter, have these 3 components, the only difference being the design. The major types of golf clubs are: driver/woods, irons, wedges and putter. And a set of golf clubs usually includes all of them.

Drivers
Driver is the longest golf club in the bag. It is also the one with the biggest club head. Main purpose of the driver is to achieve maximum distance. On the par 4 and par 5, you will see a lot of golf pros using the driver to put the ball closer to the green to reduce the number of strokes. Because of long club length and lack of loft (usually 11deg and below), it is usually also the hardest club to master.

Woods
Woods or fairway woods are the distance golf clubs. They are often used when distance is needed (hit the ball further). They usually come in number like 3-wood, 5-wood, 7-wood … (In case you are wondering the 1-wood is actually the driver). The higher the number, the higher the clubface loft and the shorter the distance it will produce.

Irons
Irons are the accuracy golf clubs. They are good for direction and distance control. Irons are usually numbered from 3 to 9. The lower the number, the higher the distance produced because of shallower clubface loft and longer club length. This means that a golf balls strike with a 3-iron will fly further than a 5-iron.

The shortest irons in the bag are the wedges. The pitching wedge is vital weapon in the short game and is usually used from distance 80 yards and nearer to the green. The sand wedge is for getting your ball out of the greenside sand bunker. It can also be used around the green. Wedges have high clubface loft and impart high backspin on the golf ball making it stop quickly on the green.

Putters
Putters are used on the green to get the golf balls into the hole. They are usually considered the most personal club in the bag because putting is all about feel. Different putter feel differently to different people. You need to experiment to find the putter that’s suit you. Since feel is a fickle thing, don’t be afraid to change putter when it is not longer working for you.
