You have found a set of used golf clubs that you like and the price is right. But how to know you got a good deal? Here are some of the things you might want to check before buying the used golf clubs.

1. Clubhead

Check the clubhead for any worn out spot. Worn out area looks smooth with no grooves. Fine surface scratches are not a problem as they are present in normal use.

For woods, check for cracks and indentations. These defects will affect play. Give the clubhead a twist to make sure that it is not loose.

2. Shaft

For graphite shaft, check for any abrasion and fraying, especially at the part of the shaft that contact the golf bag. Look out for cracks near the joint to the hosel.

For steel shaft, check for bents and dents. The shaft should be straight and free of rust.

3. Grip

Check for any worn out spot on the grip, especially near point where the thumb rest on the grip. Look out for any splitting and crack near the point nearest to the shaft.

But worn out grip is usually not a very big problem. It can be easily replaced at the cost of a few dollars per club. If you really find a used golf clubs that you like but some of the grip is not up to standard, don’t let it deter you. Just need to factor in the additional cost for re-gripping when buying.

4. For iron set

If you are buying a complete iron set, check to clubs to make sure they come from the same original set. This is important because you expect constant performance progression from across the set. Having a different club or club with different shaft flex with mess this up.

5. Additional checks

Shake the clubs to listen for any rattles. Any rattling indicates that something is loose.
