Golf Swing
Wednesday August 29th, 2007 10:12AMEvery golfer is looking to improve his/her golf swing. Everyone wanted a golf swing to hit the ball further. A golf swing that is more consistent. A golf swing that is reliable and repeatable under pressure.
In short, everyone is looking for his/her perfect golf swing.
But golf swing is the hardest part of golf to master. You can tell by the large amount of golf instructions devoted to golf swing compared to other aspect of golf.
But why is it so hard for one to find the perfect golf swing?
Firstly, there is no one single perfect golf swing. There are as many golf swings version as the number of people on this planet. Everyone has different physique, strength and flexibility. No two person are exactly alike, hence no golf swing is exactly alike. Golf swing is about returning the club head square at impact at high speed. How you do it and how your golf swing looks is not so important as long as you can achieve the impact condition.
Secondly, golf is a game of feel. Different people feel their golf swing differently. Some experts recommend starting the downswing by pulling with the arms, some say the downswing started with left hip turning. For some, it is the left knee kicking to the left. So who is right? They are all correct … for their own golf swing. This is because everybody feels things differently.
Moreover, what a person feel is not necessary what the body is doing. Feel is with the conscious mind. Muscle movement is controlled at the subconscious level.
So what can you do to improve your golf swing? Here are the steps:
1. Get exposed to as many form of golf instructions as possible
Take golf lessons, read golf swing books and ebooks. Watch golf swing video of pros. Watch golf pro hit balls on TV. Do as many form of golf instructions as possible. Why? This is because people learn things in different manner. Some learn better by watching others. Some learn by reading, some learn by feel. Some listen. Most people use combination of method. You need to find what work best for you.
2. Find out as much as possible about golf swing
Nobody become pro overnight by reading just one golf swing book or taking one golf lesson. So don’t just read one golf swing book, read as many as possible. Like I mentioned earlier, different expert feel and describe their golf swing differently. You need to get exposed to a few versions and find out which one work for you.
3. Practice
You need to devote sometime to practice in order to improve. If you can’t go the driving range, then some golf swing exercises at home or office. Do some mental/visual exercise while waiting for your laundry. There is no shortcut.
4. EXPERIMENT, EXPERIMENT, EXPERIMENT
Don’t be afraid to experiment with what you have learn in step 1 and 2. You need to experiment to sort out works for you. Throw out those that don’t work and keep practicing those that work. Having so much golf swing instruction in mind can be confusing if you do not experiment to find out. Try varying your ball position, vary your grip and play around with your alignment. But please try one thing at a time.
Yes, the above steps take some work. It requires you to take action. But if you go through this route, you will build up a golf swing experience base. So in future if your golf swing ever fall apart, you will know how to debug and rebuilt your own golf swing by going back to basic.
